IOWA CITY
Iowa City West easily won its fifth consecutive girls' crown. Led by individual champion Sarah Wickman, West accumulated 31
points. Cedar Falls was the runner-up with 79, and City High was third with 87.
Wickman won the 4A individual state title last year as a freshman. Thursday's triumph, amazingly, was her first of her sophomore
campaign.
"It really hasn't been a disappointment. I mean, the team has been doing great, and that's the most important thing," Wickman
said. "Last year, we were good. This year, I think we're doing even better."
Wickman broke free from Cedar Falls' Samantha Nygren halfway through the race and won in 14:44. Nygren was second in 14:52.
West's Claire Hall and Julia Frudden were third and fourth. Janet Dobyns was eighth.
"I'm blessed to be the guy running from corner to corner, screaming for (the) green (team)," said West Coach Mike Parker.
"We've been wanting to take giant steps at each meet, and we have yet to fail in that regard."
