West runners sign letters
By Ryan Suchomel
Iowa City Press-Citizen
Shirley Stern can't wait to run track for the University of Iowa next spring. The West High senior will finally be able to run some serious laps. "I'm excited about running longer distances," said Stern. "I want to run longer distances, above two miles." At Iowa, Stern can run the 5,000 and 10,000-meter races. West coach Mike Parker said the senior is suited for the long races. "Shirley is strong, mentally and physically," said Parker. "It's a tremendous amount of mental challenge to run that amount of laps." Stern, who has the 21st-best time in Class 3A in the 3,000, was one of four West seniors to sign letters of intent for track Friday. She joins Illinois recruit Lynn Dobyns, Kansas recruit Lindsey Windauer and Northern Iowa recruit Kristin Jacobs in heading to Division I schools. "That's what great about West, it's a nationally known program," Parker said. "They can go where they want." Stern said Iowa was a good fit because she was anxious to stay close to home and her alma mater. "I wanted to stay in my hometown," Stern said. "I want to spend time with my family and friends, and also come to events at West High."
