Peggy McGuire begins her 15th year as an assistant
Girls Cross Country coach at Iowa City West High. She has also been an assistant girls track and field coach since 2000. McGuire
has played a vital role in helping lead 9 Iowa City West High teams to state titles, six in track & field and three
in cross country. Coach McGuire has helped coach the team through much of its
success. The cross country team has had five individual state champions in Jeni Frudden, two times, Robdu Adam,
1 time and Sarah Wickman, two times, all of which Coach McGuire helped coach. All three have set all time state
records. Coach McGuire also helped coach the team to the 1st Nike Team National cross country competition in Portland, Oregon
where the team placed 10th overall, the highest finish of an Iowa team ever.
McGuire also maintains
the team website for both cross country and track.
Coach McGuire has been recognized for her effots by
being awarded Assistant Coach of the Year awards in Cross County in 2005 and in Track and Field in 2010 and just recently
for this past season, 2013.
Her expertise is utilized even beyond the West High
program. Coach McGuire has played an important role within the Iowa Association of Track Coaches for years in areas such
as state rankings, media releases, All-Academic chair and website editor as well as many others.
As an accomplished athlete herself, Coach McGuire was an
outstanding sprinter at Centerville High School. McGuire was a two time track & field State Champion, winning the 100
Meters in 1986 and again in 1988 and was the runner-up in 1987, being undefeated in the 100 meters her senior year. In 1996
she was inducted into the Centerville Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in athletics. After high school she went on to
run for the University of Iowa.
McGuire is a Level I certified coach with USATF, a
member of the Iowa Association of Track Coaches and USA Track & Field and the National Federation of High School Coaches
Association.
Coach McGuire works as a Paraeducator for West High
school in addition to her coaching. She is also obtaining her Masters in Special Education with teacher licensure in
hopes of working with Special Education students in the areas of behavior, emotional and educational issues.
Coach McGuire has two daughters.
